Saving the Sitemap

Select File / Save Sitemap, click CTRL-S or click the toolbar button with this image to open the Save sitemap dialog. Here you may save both an XML sitemap file for Google, and a simple URL list for Yahoo.

Saving the XML Sitemap

Ensure that the "Save Google XML sitemap File(s)" checkbox is checked, and select where you would like to save the file, and what you would like to call it. Sitemaps should be saved in the root folder of your site, and be named sitemap.xml.

If you have chosen to compress the file using gzip (by checking the box marked "Compress Files(s)"), Rapid Sitemaps will automatically compress it and save it with a .gz extension (eg: sitemap.xml will become sitemap.xml.gz).

Note on Extremely Large Sites:

Google has placed a limit on the number of URLs that may be included in a sitemap file, and on the size of the file itself. The limits are 50000 URLs or 10Mb. This is far more than almost every site will have, but some dynamic sites may exceed these limits. Rapid Sitemaps will not allow you to exceed these limits.

If your sitemap exceeds these limits, Rapid Sitemaps will create multiple sitemap files, and create a siteindex file, which lists all the sitemap files on your site, according to the format prescribed by Google. The sitemap files will be named sitemap_n.xml, where sitemap is the name you have chosen for your file and n is a number. The siteindex file will be given the name you chose for your sitemap file.

You will need to upload all the sitemap files and the siteindex file to your live server, but you only need to notify Google about the siteindex file.

Saving the URL List

Ensure that the "Save Yahoo! URL List File" checkbox is checked, and select where you would like to save the file, and what you would like to call it. URL lists should be saved in the root folder of your site, and be named urllist.txt.

If you have chosen to compress the file using gzip (by checking the box marked "Compress Files"), Rapid Sitemaps will automatically compress it and save it with a .gz extension (eg: urllist.txt will become urllist.txt.gz).
